Join us for the Sustainability Forum's next lunch-hour Zoom on Wednesday, December 13th to discuss Polar Exploration & Climate Change with Mike Carvalho, Environmental Attorney, Carvalho & Associates.
Local environmental attorney, SCUBA diver and polar explorer Michael Carvalho will be speaking on his scuba diving expeditions to Antarctica (2018) and the Arctic Ocean (2022) where he was part of a select team studying the impacts of Climate Change in some of the most remote environments on earth.
Mike’s discussion will include the unique challenges of scuba diving on icebergs, swimming with gentoo penguins and avoiding hungry polar bears. The presentation will include stunning images of the adaptive flora and fauna that thrive in these extreme environments, as well as the beauty of rarely observed glaciers as they calve into the ocean.
Mike will also share his role as member and international environmental law and policy advisor in a forthcoming Flag Expedition with The Explorers Club, where his team of scientists from the University of Hawaii and Wood Hole Oceanographic Institute will be researching “Plankton Observations of Lifecycles and Ecobiomes (POLEs) Mapping Polar Coastal Marine Biomes: Phase I Antarctic Peninsula 2024”. The findings of the POLEs expedition will be presented to the United Nations Environment Assembly in 2025. Significantly, his talk will include a discussion of how a warming planet is impacting the Gulf of Maine in our own “backyard” and the challenges of a rapidly changing climate.

Michael Carvalho is an experienced environmental attorney representing clients in a variety of regulatory, litigation and transactional matters throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Canada and Mexico. Prior to commencing his legal practice, Mike worked as an environmental consultant specializing in the assessment and remediation of some of the Nation’s most contaminated Hazardous Waste sites. Mike’s pro bono interests a range of local, national, and international environmental matters, to include serving as a Delegate for North America at the United Nations Environmental Assembly (UNEA-4) in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2019. Mike is a Fellow with Royal Geographic Society of London, and a National Member of The Explorers Club. Locally, Mike can be found in the waters of Cape Ann diving off his boat “Legal Claws”. He lives in Manchester by the Sea with his wife and two children.
