To remain competitive in the global economy the US needs a strong, sustainable workforce educated in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Yet, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers only 4% of US college graduates have degrees in engineering or computer science. Dr. Yvonne Spicer of the National Center of Technological Literacy will join a panel of local school districts at the May breakfast meeting of the North Shore Technology Council sponsored by North Shore Community College to discuss what steps our schools are taking to better prepare students in STEM and what you can do to ensure the workforce has the knowledge and skills your business needs to remain competitive.

A passionate advocate for pre-college STEM education, Dr. Spicer will discuss the initiatives launched by the state and the National Center of Technological Literacy (NCTL) to open this world-and the life-long opportunities it brings-to students in K-12. In addition, we will hear from several local North Shore school districts that have teamed up with the NCTL to implement technology and engineering programs in their elementary, middle, and high schools through the NCTL’s Gateway Project that has focused on implementing the state’s technology-engineering standards.
