First Friday Bioscience Seminar Series: Pfenex Inc.’s evolution from a platform technology to a product development company

Join scientists and executives from local biomedical companies for the North Shore Technology Council’s First Friday Bioscience seminar series, sponsored by the Biomedical Technology Section. In this informal venue you will meet industry peers, learn about the science behind area biomedical companies, and hear how they tackle business challenges. You’ll also connect with other scientists and executives and become part of a community of business neighbors who are committed to accelerating the growth of their companies and the region biomedical business sector.


Presentation: An overview of Pfenex’s evolution from a platform protein expression technology company to a product development company spurring value growth through a diversity of commercial approaches We will discuss how multiple funding sources, resource allocation, and differentiation enabled this transformation.

Patrick Lucy, Vice President Business Development and Marketing,
Pfenex Inc.

Patrick Lucy is the Vice President of Business Development and Marketing at Pfenex Inc., a biotechnology company leveraging its platform protein production technology for the development of biosimilars and novel vaccine products. In addition to the core focus of the company Pfenex also maintains a strain engineering service business and reagent protein catalog business.

Mr. Lucy was one of the founders of the company and played a leadership role on the original team that developed Pfēnex Expression Technology™. He played a significant role in spinning the company out of The Dow Chemical Company via a Series A financing in 2009. He has led the negotiation and completion of numerous technology partnering, licensing, manufacturing and collaboration agreements with the US Federal Government and with large and small biopharmaceutical companies worldwide. Mr. Lucy is experienced in the areas of alliance management, licensing, intellectual property, biopharmaceutical operations, and biopharmaceutical facility design, construction and validation.

Mr. Lucy has been in the biotechnology industry for over twenty two years and was previously employed by Collaborative BioAlliance, Inc., The Dow Chemical Company, Lonza Biologics, Celltech Biologics and Repligen Corporation.

Mr. Lucy holds a B.S. in Biology from Villanova University

Please register in advance – the Bioscience Committee tries to order the right amount of food. At our last meeting, we had many “door registrations” and ran out of food. At the previous meeting, we had many who registered and didn’t make it, and had a lot of left over food.
