CANCELLED: May 17 STEM Special Interest Group Event – Math Requirements – a Hurdle or a Springboard?

Full Title: Math Requirements – a Hurdle or a Springboard?

Speakers:

Billy Jackson, Faculty Member, Math Department, North Shore Community College

Pat Coiro, Teacher-Algebra 2, Everett High School

Dean Michelini, Teacher-Math, Salem High School

Description

Join a robust discussion around math education that is sure to be interesting and perhaps a bit controversial.

Together we will explore the following topics:

1. Should math requirements in high school and college be one size fits all?

2. Do math requirements and the way that math is taught inhibit students from going into certain STEM fields? Does it cause students to drop out in college?

3. How can math education be fixed so it is more real and allows students to think and not just execute a formula?

4. What is the state of remedial math at our public colleges?

In order to make this discussion more interesting for all, we strongly encourage participants to read the following two articles and watch a TedTalk:

E.O. Wilson argument against math and Dr. Edward Frankel’s counter argument
